DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY: 3/5

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is a movie set in 1943 Calcutta when the World War 2 was almost there and affected the city badly. Any death was seen as a result of crime than a naturality. Dibakar Banerjee has perfectly set the movie's tone in Calcutta of 1943 with wonderful sets and things that makes you relate with the city of that contemporary times. Even the characters and the way they behave, their mannerisms, every thing is perfectly done which makes you believe that what you are watching is not a pretentious drama but a real story which is about to unfold in front of your eyes.

The wonderful camera work and attractive cinematography impresses you as an audience and with that beautiful metallic back ground music, you find yourself totally intrigued in the movie. Each and every character is given its definite role which even if not of utmost importance, plays a necessity in the movie for that particular frame. The good thing about the story is that writer didn't waste much time in introducing characters. The matter starts from the introduction of Bakshy itself. Though the narration is very slow but the movie isn't confusing as our directors usually do in the name of thriller and suspense.

The drawback of the movie is its slow-pace which will sometimes bore you. Even the character of Byomkesh not very attractive that will make you curious. It takes time for you to love him. By interval, the plot is been set for the rest of the things to follow. And after interval, it become slow. These are few things that will bore you. Otherwise, it is still a movie that is watchable and unmissable.

Sushant Singh Rajput has been able to emote every expression that Dibakar wanted him to. He, with his unibrow, acts as a common man and not like a super hero in the movie which is what makes his character believable and relatable. To some situations, he acts just like we would have. The only difference is that his mind works little faster than others. He should be applauded for his performance. Other actors are also equally good in their role. It's a movie that tells us craft still exists in Hindi Film industry. I give the movie 3 out of 5 stars.

 Thanks.
